Solidarity with the people of the Middle East

We are deeply disturbed by the ongoing and escalating wave of terrorist violence perpetrated by Hamas against Israel, and we sincerely wish for a quick and peaceful solution for the civilian population in the region.

Professor Dr Katja Matthes, Director of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, says: “We stand firmly behind our friends and partner organisations in the affected areas. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and we want to express our deepest sympathy to all those who have lost loved ones or are anxiously waiting to hear from them.”

GEOMAR has long-standing collaborations with research institutions in Israel, such as the University of Haifa. As part of the EMS-FORE project, a Helmholtz International Laboratory in the Eastern Mediterranean has been established to study changes in this basin as a result of various external influences.
